Earlier this fall I was lucky enough to meet an incredible woman named Amanda Cockburn, AKA The Freewheeling Curator. She'd reached out to me because she was launching a pop-up bazaar of thoughtfully chosen local makers, and was looking for a little help spreading the word.
I was blown away by the event she put together. It was so well organized, so well curated (hence her name), and had such great atmosphere that I refused to believe it was the first pop-up she'd ever done. She nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. Meet the curator herself:
At the show, Amanda and I got to talking and I learned her vision went well beyond a single-day event. She wanted to create an online space for community, where shoppers would know who was makeing the products, how they were made, the inspiration behind them, and generally to create a more meaningful, community-minded way to shop.
So she built The Freewheeling Curator online boutique, where she gathered up all the beautiful handmade Canadian goodies she'd found and turned them into stunning gift collections. Essentially she created an online destination for thoughtful gifts that will set your prezzies apart from the rest. She carries bath and body indulgences, jewellery, artisnal linens, shaving kits for the dudes, greeting cards that are oh-so-cute (no Hallmark here), and even droolworthy kimonos and cozy knits.
Doing your shopping on The Freewheeling Curator's site means you're supporting Canadian-made craftsmanship and pretty much guarantees there'll be no re-gifting of your presents. And guess what? I'm giving away one of her most popular gifts! Get a load of this:
Pretty sweet, eh? One of you lucky ducks is going to win this gorgeous apothecary collection worth $69, to help you look after YOU at this nutty time of year. Here's what's in it, from left to right:
Bown Sugar Candle by Foxhound Collection: dessert for your nose.
Premium Turkish Handtowel by PLAJ: a luxurious 100% turkish cotton towel
Lip Salve by Wildwood Botanical Balms: a nourishing organic balm to sooth those dry lips.
Australian Pink Clay Facial Mask by Wilderness Soap Co.: a detox for your skin.
Coconut Almond Body Scrub by Scrub Inspired: to scrub away the day.
I asked Amanda to tell me about this collection of beautifully made indulgences. In her mind, the apothecary collection involves three commitments; here they are in her words:
Our maker's commitment to you: All of the products are all natural. They use only the freshest natural ingredients and essential oils. They ensure that all of the products you put on your skin will be good for you.
My commitment to you: My commitment to our fans is offering an apothecary collection that you can do some serious self-love with. Pick a scrub, a bath soak, a body butter, a facial spritz, whatever you like. These are quality products that tickle all of the senses (and more importantly, your nose).
Your commitment to yourself: To create rituals for yourself that allow you to slow down, unwind, and spoil yourself, even if it's only for 20 minutes on a Sunday night. Light a candle, draw a bath, add some luxe bath salts, put on a face mask, scrub your feet. Steep a cup of tea & disconnect.
