non-posey headshots with danielle lynn (reader deal)

Morning all! A few weeks ago I was approached about neat beauty project with Canadian company Scarlet & Julia, and I realized I needed new headshots, stat. My previous ones were five years and about six pairs of glasses out of date, so it was time for a refresh. And there was no doubt in my mind who I wanted to work with: Danielle Lynn Photography.

Danielle is a gifted natural light photographer (and pug lover!) based right here in Ottawa, and she works with families, kids, pets, entrepreneurs, bloggers, and business folks. I've always admired her headshots in particular, because in a field that can often be so generic and forgettable, her work is natural, polished, and personal.

Here's a taste so you can see what I mean:

I mean, RIGHT?!? How natural, effortless, and radiant do these folks look? Not the least of whom is my pal Amy Symes (also a gifted photographer) up there at the top, and the one and only Kelly Brisson of The Gouda Life just above. YEESH! Everybody looks so good!

I love these photos because 1) everyone is comfortable and un-posey, and 2) there's nary a boardroom in sight. And that's exactly what I wanted for my own pics.

I was thrilled when Danielle said she was available and I'd already been brainstorming about shooting locations. I knew I wanted to do my photos in the neighbourhood, and I wanted them indoors so they'd be season-proof (you may want to keep that in mind for your own pics too).

I chatted with my salon, Mint Hair Studio, and my gym, Iron North Fitness because they have gorgeous interiors with pops of colour and big bright windows (good fodder for Danielle, I hoped), and because they're just a short walk from my house. The incredible boss ladies at both places gave us the green light and off we went!

So here you go folks, the finished product:

LOCATION 1: MINT HAIR STUDIO

1071 WELLINGTON St. WEST, HINTONBURG

LOCATION 2: IRON NORTH FITNESS

1089 SOMERSET ST. WEST, HINTONBURG

So whadda we think? Personally, I'm thrilled with how these shots turned out -- especially because I usually feel like a dork when I'm in front of a camera. I never know how to stand, where to look or what to do, and then I worry about looking awkward. Which of course makes me look awkard.

But not so with Danielle: she gave me clear, helpful direction and was so easy to chat with that the time flew by. Thanks, girl!

Professional photos are critical for just about all of us because they're often a first impression. Whether you're blogging, working in creative, or building your LinkedIn profile, your photo will either draw others in and keep them on your site, or they'll think "meh" and click back to the cat video they'd been watching. So get some sweet photos done and grab those folks while you've got 'em!
